One casualty of the pandemic seems to be my ability to blog. My work life has gotten far more active and sitting in front of the computer longer, and writing, just isn't happening at this time.
There is, however, so much cat life going on. Siada, Layla and Malik are doing amazingly and are loving country life. They have much more fun in WV and there are so many cats outside to watch! Yes, the Furrals are doing well, and I am still chronicling their story as we work to get them all spayed and neutered. So far we have fixed 13 cats and homed 15 kittens (and one of those adults as well). It is exhausting, but will be very worth it. I DO have a Facebook Page for sharing their adventures - The Furral Report. We hope you can join us there from time to time. If you would like to contribute to the Furral Fund (money goes to spay, neuter and vaccinate both clowders), there is a GoFundMe that is currently running. Hopefully we can keep the momentum going and be in the glorious position to have No Stinky Kittens this summer!

You know those moments you just WISH you had a camera handy but didn't? That was today. Today was the day it was time to give each other COVID haircuts in the kitchen. My hair was particularly bad and driving me nuts, and it was months overdue. Siada was so excited about the whole thing and supervised the process. She really is a fearless little girl. She didn't care a bit about the noise of the clippers, the globs of hair falling on her, or even me accidentally launching the clippers across the room once. When we were done she hopped up on the chair and screamed that she was next. SCREAMED at us that she wanted to play too. So papa put the longest guard on the clippers and “cut” her hair.* She sat there so prim and proper and was just loving it. (Meanwhile Layla and Malik were in hiding somewhere because OMG SCARY.) *No feline hairs were actually cut today, but don’t let her know that. She thinks her new do is smashing. This is my lap every single night. I am going to pretend it is me they love so much, but in reality I think it is the warm and toasty tiger blanket.
So this weekend I was able to grab both Orange Boi and Daddy Cat and box them up and get them serviced by a professional. I even got to do cool things like listen to their hearts with a stethoscope!
Like the ladies earlier this year, they also got vaccinations and flea drops (the latter of which were a very generous donation). When I released Orange Boi he ran like lightening (or maybe ran like his nuts were nipped or something). Daddy was a bit slower to come out of the cage, but as soon as I was out of sight, he was gone. I worried, just like I did with Mommy and Tiny (Gimpy was in no danger of going anywhere), that they would be so traumatized that they would not come back. But Orange Boi showed up the very next morning for breakfast. He was a little shyer, but here and happy to be fed. Daddy took another day but I was so delighted to see him creep up to the porch to not only eat, but to visit with me. Another good thing is that they are now using the cat houses we purchased for them! I looked at several types and opted for the K&H Heated Houses that I found online. I got two of the larger ones, thinking that the cats would double up in the boxes (silly me), and I really very much like these products. They are insulated vinyl that fasten together with sturdy velcro. They take about two minutes to assemble. Inside is a fleece covered heating mat that only operates when there is a cat sitting on it, which should save electricity. These do not weigh much, so I do recommend that they be fastened down or weighted in some way if the area is not sheltered from the wind. In addition to the houses we also got a heated water dish so that I dont have to keep chopping ice out of their bowls. I need to disinfect it frequently, but I think they very much appreciate not having to drink slimey pond water. And because likes everything to be perfect, Siada even inspected the houses before I put them out for the Furrals. She was pleased! (I think she also wanted some of the limelight as the Furrals seem to be getting more than their share these days.) |
