Six months after the start of the pandemic and six months after working from home full-time, I finally decided that I should get a decent computer chair instead of using a dining room chair.
I looked online at chairs, but I knew that I had to actually sit in one to see which one was best for my wonky back. That meant going out in public (ugh), but I got out my favorite mask and ventured to Office Depot (which was still pretty ravaged in the office furniture department) and one of the local furniture stores (who also had nothing decent in stock and a lead time of 6 weeks on the couple they had samples of that I actually liked). At that point I decided to look online at Best Buy for gaming chairs and they actually had one in stock locally! I dashed over there and discovered that while they did indeed have one, that they don't have any put together for me to try. The very helpful young man there did tell me that I had 15 days to return it if I did not like it, and that I didnt even need the box. I could just cram it in my car and bring it back. SOLD! The BigMan put it together and I tested it out and I did kinda like it. It was very pricey though, so I wanted to make sure I liked it before I decided to keep it. Siada, brat that she is, immediately climbed the back, but I was lucky in that the mesh fabric doesn't fray or run with an 11lb cat clinging to it. I did, however, immediately cover it with an old flannel sheet to better protect the investment. Only problem is that Malik decided he hates this chair. He pretty much immediately chewed through the sheet and one of the rubber arms (that then got covered in layers of Gorilla Tape). Now, to give me his daily opinion of the furniture, he just walks up and bites it. The back, the seat, the arms. Just bites and keeps strolling. While this is not typical Savannah behavior, it is always a possibility that your Savannah won't let you have nice things. lol

Today, on the day of his birth, we remember Emperor Nimar Nimarus Rex, first of his line, he who opened up the World of Savannahs to us. I hope that he, Isis and Reeses are enjoying they afterlife and laughing as they watch these knuckleheads play.
I got an iPad this spring, and decided to test out some cat games on it. I have tried this in my past with my phone or Kindle, but only Layla had an interest and that was fleeting. After hearing some folks online talk about Mouse for Cats (available via the Apple App store and Google Play) I have to say that the folks who produced this one really understand the inner workings of a cat's fuzzy brain.
In this game, they can catch - and 'hold' - the mousie and it squeaks like mad when you do so. Malik does impressive serval pounces onto the screen (FYI, make sure you have a good screen protector as he has shatter one of those already), and Layla tries to figure out where it goes when it leaves the viewing area. Siada seems to know it's not real, so loses interest after a few minutes. The only real drawback is that now Malik wants ANY screen you have, as he thinks his game is there somewhere! Two of three Kittons give the game 5 stars. We decided to hold Layla's birthday a few days late as we were all still in deep mourning over the passing of our beloved Isis. You can see that when we finally did celebrate that it was a grand affair! Siada worked hard on decorations, even teaching her younger sister how to hang things properly. Malik even gave a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday as they worked. (And how on earth can Layla be THREE already! She is the middle child, but I swear she will always be the baby of the bunch.) We opted for two gifts this year, one is the flopping fish that seems to be all over the internet and the other is a Kong Playhouse for kitties. The latter was by far the most successful gift. (Note from January 2021, they STILL play in this house, hiding and pouncing each other or dragging it around the room pretty much every day.)
Yes, we are still grieving, but the best remedy for sorrow, as we long ago learned, is the antics of crazy little Kittons. 18 years is not enough. Isis was very tired, exhausted from a long life full of love and crazy Savannahs. She was ready, even if I could never be. I think the pandemic gave us something good, in a way. We got to spend extra time with this lady for the last five months of her live. Extra loving, extra cuddles, extra laughs. She had recovered from her lymphoma, but her kidneys were just done. I talked to a vet friend of mine who told me that she usually sees kidney issues creeping in around 15 years. In the wild a cat's life is only a few years, but we care for them so well that their length of life far exceeds the wear-and-tear on their parts. It hit Reeses at about the same age. Isis did very well through the summer but started to really slow down and drop weight in August. She could still get on the sofa and would come to bed with me every night until September rolled around and then she just chose to lay on her cat bed in the living room, often with Layla keeping close watch on her friend. Eventually, Miss Isis was done and we had to say good bye. We made it to 18, but that doesn't make it easier so my heart breaks yet again. I hope she is cuddling with Reeses and Nimar right now. Thanks to Rude Ranch for bringing her into our lives. I never thought I would say this but I miss hearing her sing the 'song of her people' in the middle of the night every night. |
