And now, let us praise the gods of the Furrals because Charcoal has NUTS! I was absolutely positive that Gimpy had 4 girls in the summer litter but it turns out that there are only three because Charcoal has... um.... blossomed a set of pompoms. Two of the other three are dilute torties so are girls (Blaze and White Tip) and the tabby (Forest) is pregnant (ugh). Sadly though, this cat is completely blind in one eye now but I cannot catch it to try to do something. Also, this is one seriously mangled batch of felines. Daddy appears as though he is going to have a bad limp forever, Mommy has a crumpled ear, Orange Boi is a mess of scars from beating everyone up all the time and Charcoal has one good eye.... We used to joke that our house was the BigMan's Home of Broken Cats when we had Nimar with his issues, Reeses who was deaf and Isis who barely had one functioning brain cell, and now, well, I guess we just attract it. I do not yet have a good photo of Charcoal (he is skittish), but we did add yet another cat house (unheated this time, as I am out of outlets) to the porch for Mommy Cat. When I initially got the houses, I bought the larger size thinking the would double up in them, but they are picky beasts and prefer to sleep solo. I got this house and stuck it on the corner where Mommy keeps watch all day and I am glad that they are at least using the new structure for something!

The newest issue of Savannahgans Magazine is live! You can Kaito, a 20 year old Savannah (and cover model!), learn about how to keep your pets safe from toxins, raw diets and more (including an article by myself covering Savannah Scams). The issue is packed with amazing cat photos as well, to help you get your Savannah fix!
And to keep you busy chatting about our favorite spotty friends, there is now a Savannahgans Facebook Group where you can share your photos and stories or ask questions about these marvelous felines. The Enemy (now called Spats, per the BigMan) and Orange Boi almost sort seem to have a bit of a truce going. There is no immediate explosion when Spats comes onto the porch, and I feed him in his shed or at the end of the porch (about 10 feet from the Furrals). They still go at it if Spats gets to close when Orange Boi doesn't want him there (sometimes he doesn't seem to care that much).
Occasionally though, Spats tries to chase Tiny Face off the porch when she comes to feed and Mommy Cat is not huge fan. He mostly leaves Gimpy alone. Daddy came up tonight, and is still profoundly limping but he is moving MUCH faster than before and he let me cuddle him (and let Orange Boi rub on him too). Spats didn't want Daddy there and I had to go intervene and chase the ball of fluff back to the shed. It wasn't a fight but I do NOT want him chasing any of the Fixed Five away. I am trying to decide if they can develop some sort of permanent truce. Maybe they will let this interloper join the colony. I mean, I don't blame Spats at all for wanting to move in. After all there is food and treats and warm little houses. Things are definitely better than they were a couple of weeks ago, but I still have to go put my foot down occasionally about the house rules (those being "leave my furrals alone"). Miss Gimpy has profoundly changed post-spay. She was an absolute sweetheart of a cat before, but now she galumps (it sounds just like that) along the porch batting around acorns. She also gets the zoomies just like inside cats do (and it always seems to startle Mommy Cat and Orange Boi). She loves to trot around after me when I go outside, often getting under my feet. Best of all, she will live a much healthier, and longer, life.
The Enemy now comes on the porch in broad daylight. He has to sit at the edge and wait for everyone else to eat, and then when Orange Boi was done “burying” all the bowls, he was allowed to come eat while Orange Boi watched from the roof of the nearby cat house. As soon as he was done eating, he crept away into the woods again. What was more adorable though was Tiny Face and Daddy Cat. They came and left dinner together. He still has a very bad limp but seems to be able to put weight on that arm now. Tiny trotted after him rubbing on him and head butting him as they walked back down to the guest cabin together. It was completely adorable. I did take some food down there and left it for them there. Daddy has lost some weight, I assume he isn’t hunting well right now while his arm heals, and I don’t want him losing any more. |
