Six months after the start of the pandemic and six months after working from home full-time, I finally decided that I should get a decent computer chair instead of using a dining room chair.
I looked online at chairs, but I knew that I had to actually sit in one to see which one was best for my wonky back. That meant going out in public (ugh), but I got out my favorite mask and ventured to Office Depot (which was still pretty ravaged in the office furniture department) and one of the local furniture stores (who also had nothing decent in stock and a lead time of 6 weeks on the couple they had samples of that I actually liked). At that point I decided to look online at Best Buy for gaming chairs and they actually had one in stock locally! I dashed over there and discovered that while they did indeed have one, that they don't have any put together for me to try. The very helpful young man there did tell me that I had 15 days to return it if I did not like it, and that I didnt even need the box. I could just cram it in my car and bring it back. SOLD! The BigMan put it together and I tested it out and I did kinda like it. It was very pricey though, so I wanted to make sure I liked it before I decided to keep it. Siada, brat that she is, immediately climbed the back, but I was lucky in that the mesh fabric doesn't fray or run with an 11lb cat clinging to it. I did, however, immediately cover it with an old flannel sheet to better protect the investment. Only problem is that Malik decided he hates this chair. He pretty much immediately chewed through the sheet and one of the rubber arms (that then got covered in layers of Gorilla Tape). Now, to give me his daily opinion of the furniture, he just walks up and bites it. The back, the seat, the arms. Just bites and keeps strolling. While this is not typical Savannah behavior, it is always a possibility that your Savannah won't let you have nice things. lol

I got an iPad this spring, and decided to test out some cat games on it. I have tried this in my past with my phone or Kindle, but only Layla had an interest and that was fleeting. After hearing some folks online talk about Mouse for Cats (available via the Apple App store and Google Play) I have to say that the folks who produced this one really understand the inner workings of a cat's fuzzy brain.
In this game, they can catch - and 'hold' - the mousie and it squeaks like mad when you do so. Malik does impressive serval pounces onto the screen (FYI, make sure you have a good screen protector as he has shatter one of those already), and Layla tries to figure out where it goes when it leaves the viewing area. Siada seems to know it's not real, so loses interest after a few minutes. The only real drawback is that now Malik wants ANY screen you have, as he thinks his game is there somewhere! Two of three Kittons give the game 5 stars. We decided to hold Layla's birthday a few days late as we were all still in deep mourning over the passing of our beloved Isis. You can see that when we finally did celebrate that it was a grand affair! Siada worked hard on decorations, even teaching her younger sister how to hang things properly. Malik even gave a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday as they worked. (And how on earth can Layla be THREE already! She is the middle child, but I swear she will always be the baby of the bunch.) We opted for two gifts this year, one is the flopping fish that seems to be all over the internet and the other is a Kong Playhouse for kitties. The latter was by far the most successful gift. (Note from January 2021, they STILL play in this house, hiding and pouncing each other or dragging it around the room pretty much every day.)
Yes, we are still grieving, but the best remedy for sorrow, as we long ago learned, is the antics of crazy little Kittons. These are some very interesting times. I get my desire to work from home full-time but I can absolutely say that I never wished it under these circumstances. My intention is to make of it what I can, and hopefully that others will do the same, when possible, until the danger becomes less profound. So now instead of being in a beautiful, funky office everyday (recently named one of the coolest places to work in Baltimore), I am holed up at the Cabin in WV with my 4 furry coworkers. Nothing to complain about there, really, except that they are not always great at doing their jobs and sometimes take their supervisory roles too seriously!
Two years ago my baby Malik was born. Just a day or so later I saw the photo online of his litter and their amazing little white ocelli (the white markings on the back of their ears). Days after that I saw his Baby Kitton picture of his fat tail and I started to fall in love.
This little guy is so gentle, especially compared to Nimar (or Siada, lol). He is affectionate and a pain in my butt. At night he curls up next to (or on) my chest and falls asleep in my arms. And he is now two. I just cannot wrap my head around the fact that it has been that long already! For his birthday this year, we got the Kittons a new, freestanding cat tree from Midwest Homes on Amazon that many of the Savannah owners were sharing on Facebook. I ordered it with some trepidation, but am more than pleasantly surprised with the sturdiness of this post. It also went together in all of five minutes, which was nice. They have yet to flip it over (though it has rocked hard a few times when Malik leaps off the top), but all of them love to scratch and climb on it, or play King of the Hill with each other on it. Layla especially loves to climb to the top and just look around and perch. We like it so much that we are considering getting a second one to put in the Princess Palace!

Back in September I had this brilliant idea to take all the scraps from making reenactment costumes and turning them into a quilt for the BigMan. Fun Fact: I hate sewing. Fun Fact 2: Pushing multiple layers of heavy linen and dense batting through a sewing machine involves muscles I never knew I had. Fun Fact 3: Savannahs are so NOT helpful! Also, Layla Squashin' happened! We had a discussion the other night about whether or not the kittons could survive in the wild if they got outside. The decisions we came to are as follows:
Siada: She could absolutely do it. She is fast, an accomplished huntress, and is capable of hiding in plain site. Could, however, is not would. She considers working for her food to be beneath her and therefor would expect to have a handmaiden out in the forest with her to hand feed her and provide kisses and warm lap. Layla: Not for five minutes. Poor gal jumps at her own shadow and isn't capable of killing anything, as the mouse she watched getting fat sitting in the midst of her kibble bowl can attest. (She stared in awe, and perhaps sorrow over loss of kibble, as the tiny rodent just chowed away mere inches from her own fuzzy muzzle.) Malik: Like Siada, he is an accomplished hunter, but given that there would be no one out there to tell him to eat his yummy, nummy food and OMGYOUARESUCHAGOODBOI and WHATACHAMPIONEATERYOUARE as he noshes away, he would not last much past a day. |
